Frequently asked questions
Spark is designed to be the perfect desktop collaborative companion. Automate the most strenuous, tedious, and delicate tasks in your workflow with industry-leading repeatability.
Any operation that hand-finishes parts before they ship: machined parts, castings, sheet metal, aerospace and medical components, furniture, cabinetry and molded plastics. Standard Bots robots deburr, polish, sand and grind.
Core fits most finishing work with handheld-style tools like sanders, polishers and deburring spindles. Choose Thor for heavy grinders or large parts that need more reach. Spark suits small parts and light polishing at a bench. Size the robot to the tool's weight plus the push force the process needs, as well as the reach required for all part surfaces.
Abrasives wear as they work, so a robot that only repeats a fixed path will press less as the media wears down and leave an uneven finish. In its guidance on robotic deburring, 3M concludes that controlled force is what produces consistent results. Standard Bots robots use built-in force sensing to hold a set pressure along the path, and compliant tools can add to that.
Both setups work, and the part will determine what works best. For large or awkward parts, the robot carries the tool across the finishing surface. For small parts, the robot picks the part and presents it to a fixed belt, wheel or spindle, which lets you use heavier stationary equipment. Our applications engineers help you choose.
Often, yes. When the machining cycle leaves enough time, the robot can deburr or clean the finished part between loads instead of sending it to a manual bench. Whether it fits depends on your cycle, so we'll review it with you.
The right robot for every task
Core fits most tending cells. Step up to Thor for heavy parts, or down to Spark for benchtop machines.
